musings of a hopefilled soul

Insight

“Now there’s a picture of dysfunction,” they whispered,
Astute, because of the familiar.
Dysfunction…. It’s all a matter of degree…
So we hid our secrets and our lives
Hoping no one else would notice,
Deceiving even ourselves.
Wounded and broken inside…
We thought it was unfixable, unspeakable, a mess!
An answerless problem.
So we chose the pretense.
Others believed along with us, till crisis came calling.
Once exposed, issues rushed to the surface.
Reluctantly, we removed the mask.
Through emotional digging and pain, and prayer,
We began to heal from the inner wounds,
Whatever their cause!
Be aware…Cope differently…Grow…
A conscious choice we needed to make.
There is hope!
The journey was slow… labored.
There were times we wanted to quit.
To return to more comfortable manners of coping.
But we kept pressing on…gutting it out,
…facing hurts, facing reality,
…facing the fact that upbringings aren’t perfect,
But that the responsibility was ours to not repeat the mistakes,
To forgive, to love, and to live again
With joy and meaning to our lives.
We survived it!
And with the surviving came insight,
A present to give those
Struggling to arise from their own dysfunction.
And we became very aware that we ALL are dysfunctional,
It’s simply a matter of degree.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
