A Form of Godliness

Chicago Baby Jonylah Watkins shot photo

How sad… the shooting death of the 6 month old baby in Chicago!  We are outraged that in America, our safety is compromised.  Callous and uncaring individuals with guns and little else to do on any given day, choose to purge themselves of their ills and frustrations by inflicting  pain and rage on unsuspecting others.

Guns are publicized as the issue, and they do bear SOME scrutiny.  But do our choices as a country contribute to this tragedy?  We talk free speech and yet limit and restrict any reference to God that might possibly be perceived as offensive to a specific group.  All the while we watch, woefully, questioning what has happened to our society and seeking to legislate away our issues.

Life throws many obstacles our way.  None are promised a perfect home life, total freedom from unfair insults or put downs by others. We have no guarantee that emotional pain will not come our way on our journey through life.  But our faith in God, when utilized, gives us a lifeline, a place to turn, when all around us fails.

We say we will educate!  Teach kindness and concern for others! Sounds admirable!  But we neglect to include how we obtain the strength to do so.  Our strength and source is God!!! A faith that causes us through Christ’s words to examine our lives and in His strength to grow in compassion and love. To follow His commands and grow in faith.

Is acknowledging God so wrong?  Is our society getting better by limiting His mention?  I don’t think so!  To fully embrace and believe in God results in changes in the lives of those so involved.  If the change occurs to one hopeless person who now turns to God for solace rather than acting out the pain in their own lives, wouldn’t that be worth it?  If one gang member realizes the love of God and finds the strength to move beyond gang life, isn’t that a good thing? God’s power is life transforming!

Yet we continue in our ignorance as a nation, thinking we are strong and progressive,  all the while we are poor and needy and weak.  Are we finding no faith, as we try to please every faith?  Have we by our choices, in essence watered down the power of the living God?

3 For the time is coming when people will not tolerate sound and wholesome instruction, but, having ears itching for something pleasing and gratifying, they will gather to themselves one teacher after another to a considerable number, chosen to satisfy their own liking and to foster the errors they hold, 4 And will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and man-made fictions. II Timothy 4:3-4,   The Amplified Bible

I recognize this post may seem to lack my usual inspirational message, however, it reflects my thinking on this day.  The silver lining here is that it causes me to seek God more deeply.  In that seeking I find the ability to understand that He is not surprised by any of this.  He is not hiding somewhere, shuddering and thinking, “Oh no, what am I going to do now!!”  No!…He is and always will be our rock when all around many are building their lives on sifting sand.  He knows the end from the beginning and His plan is not thwarted!  God IS faithful. He IS God and says,”I change not!”  Praise His Name!  Through Him, we ALWAYS walk in victory!!
